Engineering & Code Compliance

Every Free Bird railing system is designed to meet the guard requirements of the National Building Code of Canada, so your project is built on a solid, code-compliant foundation.

Built to code

Our railing systems are designed to meet the guard height and picket spacing requirements set out in the National Building Code of Canada, including maximum 4-inch (100 mm) openings between pickets so a sphere that size can't pass through, and standard guard heights for residential decks and stairs.

Building codes can vary by province and municipality, so always confirm the specific height and load requirements that apply to your project with your local building department before finalizing your design.

Structural performance

Our aluminum and glass railing systems are engineered to resist the concentrated and uniform loads the National Building Code of Canada requires for guards on residential and light commercial applications, when installed according to our instructions and secured to a structurally sound deck or stair.

Permits & local requirements

Most municipalities require a permit for new or replacement deck and stair railing above a certain height — check with your local building department before you start. If your project needs a site-specific stamped engineering letter or drawing, contact us to discuss your requirements.
